Immerse your family into a world of outdoor learning and discovery.
Trailmix.Net helps parents create family outdoor learning and adventure experiences. Our products engage children, educate them on topics such as nature, history, and the natural sciences, and teach them how to set and achieve goals. Trailmix.Net products cost less than a trip to the movies and can create memories that last a lifetime.
About our Company
Trailmix.Net is the world's first Expedition Toy and Game Company. We develop and deliver engaging products that create outdoor educational experiences for children in the areas of nature, history, and the natural sciences. We commit ourselves to high standards of integrity while helping parents create rich family time, cultivate curiosity, and develop habits of lifelong learning.
We are the opposite of a large company. Trailmix.Net is owned and operated by Casaval Ridge Technologies LLC, which is owned and operated by Mike and Sara Barlow of Sacramento, CA.
About our Products
Trailmix.Net develops and manufactures a line of educational products that interact with the Trailmix.Net website. These products come in two forms:
Trailmix.Net Scavenger Hunts are outdoor scavenger hunts designed for families with children under twelve. Scavenger hunts bring a user to a unique location and present a story line with educational riddles. When the user solves all of the riddles, a completion code is generated. Entering the completion code into the Trailmix.Net website triggers the shipment of a collectable prize.
Trailmix.Net Educational ExpeditionsTM are outdoor project plans designed for families with children of all ages. Educational Expeditions are detailed project plans designed to create memorable outdoor recreation experiences. A project could be a backpacking trip and the project plan would include a purpose statement, goals, skills that participants are required to develop before starting the project, directions, trail conditions, photos, maps, and nearby side trips. Upon completion of the project, the user enters a completion code into the Trailmix.Net website to trigger shipment of a collectable prize designed specifically for that project.
Our History:
We (Mike and Sara Barlow, the founders of Trailmix.Net) moved to Northern California from Idaho in 1996. Before children, we spent as many weekends and vacations as possible hiking, climbing, and exploring the outdoor recreational opportunities that California has to offer. Together we have camped, backpacked, climbed fourteen thousand foot peaks, and completed multi-pitch technical climbing routes.
Once we had children, we were surprised to learn that outdoor recreation with kids is a whole different ball game that involves completely different goals and logistics. In this process we found that outdoor recreation and leisure with children is all about creating memorable learning opportunities through exploration and discovery. Children are natural explorers. If you provide the right setting and the framework, you can consistently create engaging learning and discovery opportunities.
The desire to build a process around creating memorable outdoor experiences lead to the creation of Casaval Ridge Technologies (our parent publishing company) in 2006 and to the Trailmix.Net blog shortly thereafter. At that time Trailmix.Net was a kitchen table operation. We knew that we wanted to build a business around the idea of teaching parents how to create constructive educational experiences, but the ideas, processes and product designs were still in their infancy. Over time, the Trailmix.Net website and product line began to take shape. In the fall of 2008 we manufactured our first product, The Trailmix.Net Yosemite National Park Scavenger Hunt Kit.

The Trailmix.Net Terms of Use Policy:
The use of Trailmix.Net software, communication services, and content is governed by our Terms of Use Agreement. The agreement is in place to establish three fundamental governing ideas for the site. First, outdoor recreation can be dangerous. Participants need to know that there is no way to completely eliminate risk when participating in outdoor activities. Through education and skill building, the probability of an accident can lower risk, but risks with outdoor recreation always exist and can never be completely eliminated. Second, Trailmix.Net communication services such as blogs, photo albums, and forums are for family outdoor recreation, not spam. Material that is not "Rated G" is better suited for other websites. Users of the Trailmix.Net services must agree to this standard. Third, Trailmix.Net administrators and/or moderators reserve the right to exclude a user from the site at any time for failing to meet the standards set in the terms of use.
